Alyssa & Craig Engagement Session | Portsmouth, NH

Alyssa & Craig Engagement Session | Portsmouth, NH

Happy Wedding Wednesday! I am bringing back this Alyssa and Craig’s engagement session to today’s wedding Wednesday not only for engagement inspiration but also, these two were to be married this coming Saturday but with all that is going on in the world right now, their wedding day is now in June. I am still so excited for them and I am looking forward to giving them both hugs once this is all over! Enjoy their engagement session photos for some E-sesh inspo!

** FROM THEIR PREVIOUS BLOG**

Alyssa and Craig had their engagement session this past fall in downtown Portsmouth, NH. I have only been to this town twice before their session and I have to say I am so glad they chose here!  I just loved that we had so many different locations to choose from, and the light was just so perfect! The weather was starting to get a little chilly, but it felt good to walk around without jackets, chatting the whole time and laughing! We had so much fun and I am so excited to celebrate the Eve of Henry’s birthday with them this April!

what style do you prefer?

D R E S S Y o r C A S UA L

These choices represent the three main decisions you will have to make in regards to your outfit choices. There are no right or wrong answers! Maybe you want one outfit to be dressy and the other to be casual. Maybe you want one outfit to be very light and neutral but you want to wear more color in the next outfit. These categories will hopefully help you determine what you’re hoping for in your engagement session. If you’re feeling stuck and can’t seem to determine what you prefer, that’s very normal!

Here are some general “rules of thumb” when it comes to styling during an engagement session. Once you read through these, you may have a better understanding of what you prefer and you can start planning your outfits. These “rules of thumbs” are based off of my experience and aren’t concrete rules that can’t be broken. However, if you have questions about one of them in regards to what you want to wear, just email me and we can talk about what would be best! :

Things to Avoid:

1. Colors to avoid : bright reds, neons, bright oranges (they reflect color onto skin and can be difficult to edit!)

2. Avoid patterns smaller than a quarter : Tiny patterns cause something called “Chromatic Aberration” in digital images. Men’s checkered shirts are fine if the “checks” are on the larger side.

3. Alternate Heaviness: If one of you is wearing very dark jeans, the other may want to wear lighter pants. If one of you is wearing a navy top, the other shouldn’t wear a dark/heavy colored top. To a certain degree, alternating the “heaviness” of your outfits can make your images look more balanced.

4. Avoid one of you being casual while the other is more dressy: This can look a bit awkward in photos. If one of you is dressed up and the other is casual, it can look a little odd in your images.

5. Other things to avoid: Tennis shoes, Graphic tees, Bold logos on shirts, Sunglasses & Baseball Hats

ROMANTIC STYLE RECIPE

If you’re hoping for a more romantic style of shoot that includes “light” and “airy” colors, you can actually make outfit choices that will lend your images to turn out brighter, softer and extra photogenic! Here are some ingredients that go into creating a romantic styled shoot. It’s important to note that you do not need to choose all of these ingredients in order to have a light and airy style to your images but the more ingredients you include, the more romantic it will be:

– Neutral Colors: Blushes, tans, light pinks, faint blues and light minty teals, creams, grays and whites will always result in more of a light and airy look in your images. These colors photograph softer and more romantically!

Long, Flowy Skirts/Dresses: Dresses and skirts with feminine ruffles, multiple layers of fabric and the ability to blow and move in the wind will always photograph beautifully! You would be amazed at how impactful moving fabric softens an image.

– Khakis vs. Jeans: If you really want your images to be as bright as possible, consider having your groom wear lighter pants instead of dark dress pants or dark jeans.

B R I GHT & B O L D R E C I P E

Just like the “Romantic” recipe, you don’t have to apply all of these “ingredients to get a perfectly BRIGHT & BOLD look to your engagement session. These  ingredients include:

– Only one wears a pattern: If one of you has a bold pattern, it’s very important that the other doesn’t. The more bold the pattern, the more important this rule is!

Bold Backgrounds: A lot of time, if my couples are going for a bold and bright look, I will notice solid colored backgrounds to use for part of their engagement session! It’s a double win if the background coordinates

with their outfits!

– Only one bold color: If you really want a bold and bright look but you want to do it well and tastefully, I would suggest that only one of you have a bright and bold colored outfit and the other stay in a solid

neutral to avoid over-doing it!

– Large Patterns are Preferred: If you really want to wear a pattern, my only request is that your pattern is on the larger side. Patterns that are smaller than a quarter can be difficult to photograph. This isn’t true of

all patterns but it’s a good general rule to go by!

So there you have it! Hope this post is helpful for you in planning your engagement session style! Feel free to comment below or email with if you have any questions!

Faneuil Hall Engagement Session | Catherine & Ryan

Faneuil Hall Engagement Session | Catherine & Ryan

When it comes to winter weather, you really have no idea what you’re going to get. One day in New England its in the mid 60’s and then the next day it’s back to the low 30’s. It’s windy, it’s rainy… it’s sunny… whatever it is, you just don’t know exactly what it will be. When scheduling an engagement session, you really have no idea and you hope for the best weather.

Catherine and Ryan had set up their engagement session with me not long after meeting them. I’ve always loved it when my couples book either their wedding or their engagement session during the winter because I am always hoping for snow! Snow is just so magical to me and photographs so nicely! Well, we had some snow that had been on the ground for a little bit. Instead, we got a forecast that called for rain, however, it held off until after our session. We had some wind and some over cast skies and we all learned to embrace it! With the wind, we were pretty cold, but I FINALLY remembered to bring my hand warmers and those bad boys worked wonders!

Catherine and Ryan are so relaxed, up for anything and they trusted me. It’s hard enough to feel comfortable having your pictures taken in normal situations, but these two made it easy even with the wind and foggy areas! We started our session at Faneuil Hall in Boston and walked to Christopher Columbus Park and then to the Boston Harbor Hotel. I loved getting to shoot this area from the other side of the Sea Port!

I had the best time getting to know them and I am so excited for their wedding day! Here are a few favorites from our time together. xoxo

The Pavillion at Pinehills Wedding Venue | Stephanie and Daniel

Stephanie and Daniel started my 2020 wedding season with a winter wedding that was absolutely beautiful! I remember talking to them at their engagement session about their wedding and the vision they were going for. Since their wedding was in the winter, they wanted pine trees, deep forest greens, and snow would be nice. It sounded so pretty and I am so excited to share with you just how amazing it really was! The staff at Pinehills made this vision of Stephanie’s come to life with their amazing work in the reception room. The cake was absolutely amazing with it being all white with pine trees “painted on” which resembled lace! I couldn’t stop looking at how amazing it looked!

Stephanie and Daniel were all for having photos outside and I love them for it! We were chasing the light for their portrait session but we got it all in and we were even able to get the wedding party outside too for their portraits! You can’t even tell it was freezing outside! The night ended with snow which was just a dream come true! We were able to sneak outside while the snow was falling for a few portraits of Stephanie and Daniel!

One of my favorite parts from their day was their maid of honor’s speech to the bride and groom. She said the nicest things about gaining a best friend on the day she was born and continued on her speech with an accompany of a guitarist while she sang her sister this song…

When you’re down and troubled
And you need some loving care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there
You’ve got a friend

If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old North wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you’ll hear me knocking at your door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running, a-running, yeah, yeah-eah
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there
Yes I will

Now ain’t it good to know that you’ve got a friend
When people can be so cold
They’ll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don’t you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I’ll come running, a-running, yeah, yeah-eah
To see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there, yes I will (oh, yes I will)

You’ve got a friend
You’ve got a friend
Ain’t it good to know
You’ve got a friend
Ain’t it good to know
Ain’t it good to know
Ain’t it good to know
You’ve got a friend
Oh, yeah now
You’ve got a friend
Yeah baby
You’ve got a friend
Oh, yeah
You’ve got a friend

I do not think there was a dry eye in the room! It was beautiful and Emily’s voice was amazing. This moment gave me chills and ALL THE FEELS!!

The Lund Family | HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Lund Family | HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Kicking off 2020 with the Lund Family! You guys this was my last family session of 2019 and I am thrilled I was able to spend it with these guys! I have worked with Jordan from Jordecor a few times over the years, and if you do not already follow her, you need to! She is an influencer on social media platforms and teaches all things decor! She shares real life stuff and her creative heart is amazing!!! I just love everything that she creates!

Their session was in time for Christmas photos, and they had a bonus where there was still some snow on the ground! With a few Christmas card perfect photos, they also added on a little 2020 surprise toward the end of our session! Being as creative as Jordan is, not only did they look amazing with their coordinated outfits, she went out and got a few things to celebrate the new year! The best is that they do not need to stress about getting their cards out in time for Christmas, they can send out Happy New Year cards instead! I loved this idea and I love how these all came out. I loved getting to spend some time with the whole family and I am excited to see how their cards came out for this year!

Jordan, Ben, Griffin and Autumn, Thanks for much for braving the cold to get a few family portraits from 2019! I am so honored you chose me to capture your family photos and I hope you love them as much as I do! Happy New Year! xo.
