Baby Emerson | Lifestyle Newborn Session

Baby Emerson | Lifestyle Newborn Session

I am declaring 2019 the year of baby girls! Yup, who run the world? GIRLS! This is my 3rd newborn session over the past 3 months and they were all baby girls! Now, I have 2 boys so all these baby girls are really making me want another…. kinda… well… I don’t know… maybe! (Just not yet!)

Emerson was born on July 4, 2019 and welcomed by her mom, dad and grandmothers. She came a little early, but not too early! She is the perfect little peanut and I have to say, photos make her look way bigger than she really is! She is a whopping 6lbs 15oz and she is just a ball of loving! I photographed her mom and dads wedding just about 2 years ago ( see their wedding blog here)  and I feel so honored I get to capture these first time moments of them learning to be parents. I feel like they are two of “my babies” just because I get to watch them go from dating, to fiance’s to husband and wife and now, mom and dad!

Maddie, CJ and Emerson, Thank you so much for having us at your home and letting my boys and I meet the baby at just 5 days old. We all love her so much and we can not wait to see the 3 of you again soon! Don’t blink because before you know it, she will be walking! 🙂 Love you all!

Here are just a few of my favorite photos from our session together. I just can not get enough of her! xoxo.

The Neithercut Family | Cape Cod, MA

I feel like it’s been a long time since my last post when really, it was just a couple of weeks ago! Well, I am back and I am so excited to share this extended family session with you! You may remember Caitlyn and Chris from their engagement session in Boston and their wedding day at the Chatham Bars Inn, and if you don’t- take a look here and here! I loved getting to capture those two big milestones in their life and I was so excited that Caitlyn contacted me to capture another milestone with their family!

Their session was in West Yarmouth, which I just loved every minute! The Cape Cod beaches will NEVER get old to me. Even if I am there for 2 hours max during a session, I love every second of being there doing the thing I love. This family was just so great to work with. I loved their coordinated nautical outfit choices and it was so nice I got to meet 2 more members of their family- Baby Nora (3 months) and Baby Jack who is almost a year this August! We had a great time and I can not wait to see them all again soon!

Caitlyn, Chris, Jack, Scott, Kristin, Skylar, Kayden, John, Sarah, James, Nora, Jim, Claudia- Thank you so much for inviting me to your Cape Cod home and trusting me to capture these images of your family. I hope that these bring a smile to your faces when you see them and remember how perfect your vacation was here at this house, on this beach, with each other. Love you guys! xo

This was one of the last photos I took this day. Dad and his two girls. I asked him to “pick a daughter and look at her” and the reaction of who he picked to look at first was hysterical, but then all of a sudden a wave of emotions hit. These are his girls. They are wives. They are mothers. They are daughters and I can only imagine how proud of them he is. .At first I thought I said something to upset him but then I realized that these were happy tears. They were all together. It doesn’t get any better than that. .

Family Sessions | What to Wear

Family Sessions | What to Wear

Hi Friends! I have had so many people ask me about outfit choices for their family session, I decided a blog post would be a great way to share that information with you! These are just a few outfit coordinating tips that I have thought about through the years but the most important thing is that you are comfortable!

When thinking about what to wear and props to bring, just know that less is more. I do not provide props for sessions but I am happy to incorporate things that you may want to bring. One thing we can do would be styling to add a little something to your images. We do not need to have a ton of things to style with, maybe just a few.

Here are my tips and tricks for getting ready to have an amazing family session!

Styling your Session

Want your photos to look more editorial? Bring a little extra something with you! Fresh flowers bring an extra “wow” factor to just about everything, especially when they’re attached to something else, like a bicycle basket, tree swing, tent, picnic basket, balloons or car bumper. Whether you want to incorporate larger items like classic cars or bikes, or smaller ones like blankets or hats, even planning for just one extra styled item could be a fun way to make your session more unique.

Coordinating the Crew

As you’re coordinating your outfit with your family, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palette and wardrobe pieces coordinate, but don’t actually “match.” In fact, I recommend that you avoid thinking about “matching,” and instead think about what “fits” together. This will create more visual interest, and allow each personality to shine through.

How to Mix Colors

The goal for coordinating a family is to visually break up the colors and shades so that you’re not all wearing the same color on top and bottom. The more we can mix that up, the better. I encourage you to think about planning each outfit with “dominant colors” and “accent colors” in mind. A dominant color is the color that you see the most in an outfit, while an accent has a smaller piece of visual real estate. When you’re planning each family member’s outfit, if you can aim for each person to have a different dominant color, and then tie in and vary the accent colors, it’s going to look great all together.

For example, if you’re wearing a blush dress, soft blue earrings and nude heels (blush being your dominant color), then he could wear a navy coat with a white button-down and gray pants, paired with brown leather shoes and maybe even a blush pocket square (making navy his dominant color). Your daughter could wear a soft blue top with a white tulle skirt (making a soft blue her dominant color) while your son wears light beige pants with navy suspenders and a white button down (making white his dominant color). Now each person has their own dominant color while still incorporating a few touches of the others that will pull all the looks together. This will break up the color visually and highlight each personality. Most of my moms choose their dress first, and then build the rest of the family’s outfits based around that.

Remember, I recommend selecting those softer, lighter tones and avoiding those ultra-bright, bold colors. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. Feel free to vary the shades of the colors, too. That softer color palette fits beautifully into a natural environment, and can easily be paired in so many different ways.

Mixing Up the Pieces

If you have multiple children, don’t feel like you need to put them all in the same type of outfit. For example, one of your daughters could wear a dress and flats, while the other wears a skirt and boots. One of your sons could wear a bowtie, while the other one wears suspenders. Mixing up the wardrobe pieces will bring a great visual interest to the photos.

Prepping Your Little Ones

Before your session, pack a bag with snacks, water and any small objects (like toys or lollipops) that might help me get their attention when it’s time for them to look at the camera. If they are old enough to understand you, it’s a good idea to prepare them for what’s to come before the session starts. Explain how much the photos mean to you so they know to be on their best behavior. A lot of families discuss and pick something fun in advance as a treat after the session if they’re good listeners, like an ice cream cone, for example. It also helps if they’re bellies are full and they’ve has some good rest beforehand. Once you prepare them physically and mentally, then feel free to give them (and you!) grace! They’re little, and I know that some days don’t always go as planned. I’ve seen it all and will make sure to get you great photos, regardless of their moods. My goal is to make this as fun and stress-free as it possibly can be for you and your family!

I hope this is a helpful guide when it comes to getting your family ready for your photography session! If you have any questions or more things to add, let me know, I would love to hear from you!

xoxo,

Alex

The {B} Family // Fall Newborn-Family Session | Chiltonville, MA

Just a little over a year ago, I saw this beautiful family for Big Brother Jack’s 1st birthday photos. At the time he was not fully walking on his own yet but he was trying! You can view their session here! It’s really cool to go back and look at those photos and see how big Jack got over the last year!

I ran into mom and Jack this past August and shortly after she contacted me for another family session, this time, with their newest addition, Mason! I was so excited to see them all again and to get to meet Mason! He’s absolutely adorable at just 10 days old. Jack is already an awesome big brother and mom and dad couldn’t have looked any happier!

Their session was in Chiltonville, MA. I just love this location for fall photos as the fields there are just so open and the colors have started to change on the trees! Emily said she was hoping to have photos with the fall colors  and when she agreed to have their session at Chiltonville I was so excited, I knew they would love it. It was a little windy and cold during their session, but we made it work. Jack and Mason were troopers! We warmed up in the car mid way through their session and then were able to get out and do a few more photos along the path just as the sun was setting so nicely!

Emily, Keith, Jack and Mason I hope you love your fall family photos! I had so much fun spending time with you and I am so happy I got to meet Mason and see how big Jack is! Congratulations on your new little guy! Thank you for trusting me to be your family photographer! Here are some of my favorite photos from our session…although it was very hard to choose! xo.

Rexhame Beach Extended Family Session | Marshfield, MA

Rexhame Beach Extended Family Session | Marshfield, MA

Another family session post for you all to see! This session took place during sun set at Rexame Beach. It was such a gorgeous night and the sun gave off a beautiful glow! I just love extended family sessions! It’s so nice when a big family can get together for photos and I know it doesn’t happen very often for many! I was so impressed that these guys were able to work out a date for everyone to be there, and I was able to be there as well!

For these images, I edited in 2 different styles. My light and airy approach will at times “blow out” the sky. This night was so pretty and they sky gave off beautiful colors but I am sharing with you the original edits I completed as I just love the glow tones on the family.

Being at the beach is my happy place! I love it when I get to chase kids around and get those authentic smiles! This session as a lot of fun and the kiddos were wonderful!

To the Mullin Family, Thank you so much for trusting me to capture your family photos! It was wonderful meeting you all and I just love the coordinated outfits! Here are just a few of my favorites from our session together!
